Evidence Based Management of Geriatric Low Back Pain

Description

The treatment of geriatric low back pain can be challenging for even seasoned therapists.  This fun lab course gives all participants the knowledge and the skills to achieve clinical success for older adults with low back pain.  An evidence based assessment structure is covered step by step.  Traditional and mind-body treatment interventions and their evidence are reviewed.  Lab sessions include a variety of exercises that are appropriate and effective for this population.

This course is 80% lab and 20% lecture.  Course activities emphasize experiences for the adult learner including sample patients, case studies, group discussion, and post-tests.

Objectives

By the completion of the course the participant will be able to:

  1. Discuss the quality of evidence for 5 therapeutic interventions.
  2. Identify the 3 interventions with the strongest evidence.
  3. Select correct low back pain treatment classifications based on history and physical examination.
  4. Match interventions to the treatment classification.
  5. Discuss the special challenges of treating LBP in the geriatric population.

Sarah is a doctor of physical therapy and Vice President of Clinical Strategies for HealthPRO-Heritage. She is responsible for development and implementation of a wide range of evidence based clinical programs for the entire continuity of care with a large focus on adapting to healthcare reform, improving outcomes and increased quality measures. She provides clinical field support to ensure successful application of clinical programming, outcome tracking, and marketability of programs while considering fiscal impact of new programs. She presents in-services and trainings to therapists, facilities, and regional teams, provides clinical support to ensure accurate tracking of outcome data and use of outcome measures. She is an expert in program development, evidence-based practice, outcome measure utilization and statistical analysis of data.

Sarah has taught evidence-based continuing education classes for nine years. Her clinical specialties are the spine, vestibular and balance disorders. She has treated older adults in outpatient, hospital and subacute rehabilitation settings. Sarah is McKenzie certified and is a certified yoga instructor. Sarah’s classes provide a holistic approach to evaluation and treatment and incorporate a variety of learning approaches.

We recommend that you bring a lunch -- a small refrigerator and microwave will be available at the Education and Training Center in Homer Glen!

Cancellations:
Registration fee, less a $50 administration fee per session, is refunded if notice of cancellation is received more than 10 days in advance of the CE event. Cancellations made less than 10 days in advance of the CE event date forfeit the entire tuition fee. Tuition can be transferred to another individual or another CE event, one time only. No transfer, refund or credit will be given for cancellation 3 days or less before the CE event, or when handouts or other CE event materials are available electronically, including but not limited to emailed or downloadable pdf documents.
All unapplied transfers and credits will expire September 26, 2026.

Rehab Connections reserves the right to cancel the CE event up to one week prior to the CE event. Rehab Connections will not be responsible for any charges incurred by the registrant due to the cancellation of the CE event, other than the CE event tuition.
