Headaches and migraine are complex yet simple and unique yet common. A functional medicine approach involves looking for root causes and addressing the whole person, not just symptoms so this new course emphasizes ongoing examination and evaluation. For interventions, key components of nutrition and lifestyle education will be paired with manual therapy so this course is the best of both worlds!

Through lecture, Q&A, and small group activities, learn how to help identify precipitating factors and triggers, interventions for acute care of headaches, and educational strategies to enable patients and clients to prevent and manage recurrent headaches. Patient and client examples will be interspersed throughout this course including specific examination items, questionnaires, checklists, journals, and more.

Topics

• Understanding different types of headaches without being dependent on diagnostic labels
• Root causes of headaches that impact the PT/OT plan of care and the complexity of our evaluations
• Diet, nutrition, and lifestyle modification education as a component of treatment of headaches
• Overview of medications with potential nutrient depletion that may be associated with headaches
• Pearls from pain neuroscience education (PNE)
• Musculoskeletal issues as precipitating and perpetuating factors in headaches
• Manual therapy and postural interventions - LAB for examination and treatment
• Overview of toxin exposure and detoxification relevant to our treatment of headaches
• Common nutrient deficiencies and food sensitivities that may contribute to headaches
• When to involve other practitioners such as dentists, TMJ specialists, ENTs, and PCPs

Objectives

By the completion of the course you will be able to:

1. Compare and contrast functional medicine to conventional medicine.
2. Utilize a checklist of headache triggers and precipitating factors.
3. Identify 2 potential underlying perpetuating factors for chronic, recurrent headaches.
4. Discuss 3 wellness strategies that address common food sensitivities associated with headaches.
5. Discuss 3 wellness strategies that address lifestyle modification associated with headaches.
6. Perform a series of 5 or more manual techniques to assess and treat cervicogenic, scapulogenic, and cranial symptoms.
7. Describe 3 strategies for self-management of headache pain.

Registration fee, less a $50 administration fee per session, is refunded if notice of cancellation is received more than 10 days in advance of the CE event. Cancellations made less than 10 days in advance of the CE event date forfeit the entire tuition fee. Tuition can be transferred to another individual or another CE event, one time only. No transfer, refund or credit will be given for cancellation 3 days or less before the CE event, or when handouts or other CE event materials are available electronically, including but not limited to emailed or downloadable pdf documents.
All unapplied transfers and credits will expire September 26, 2026.

Rehab Connections reserves the right to cancel the CE event up to one week prior to the CE event. Rehab Connections will not be responsible for any charges incurred by the registrant due to the cancellation of the CE event, other than the CE event tuition.
