Description

This will be an interactive, engaging course in a primarily lecture format with small group discussions, self-quizzes, activities in pairs, and excerpts from videos, audio CDs, and podcasts. Short lab segments will allow you to experience simple techniques to share with your patients to reduce their pain experience.

Topics

• Therapy and healing - Is it a tissue issue? What are the mechanical aggravating or perpetuating factors? Where does fear avoidance fit in? How do imaging tests influence healing and pain? Why is placebo a good thing? How can therapists address flare-ups? How do we dose exercise and movement when chronic or persistent pain is present?
• Opioids - What are the most common opioids? What are risks and side effects associated with opioids? What is opioid hyperalgesia? How do we help patients who want to take less medication or stop taking opioids?
• Communication and Language - What are patients hearing from us and other medical professionals? What are patients really saying to us? How can we change our words to decrease their pain experience? What is the difference between sympathy and empathy? What is catastrophizing and how can we help minimize it?
• Brain science - What are we learning about our perception of pain? Is pain in the tissues or the brain? What are neurotags? What is smudging and how can we reverse it?
• Inflammation - Review of inflammatory responses. Different perspectives on the role of inflammation on pain. Factors that influence inflammation such as stress, nutrition, sleep, exercise, and more.
• Central sensitization - Overview for the clinician and easier explanation for patients. How do clinicians recognize sensitized nerves? How and why does it happen? What is important information we need to know about our patients' injury or surgery? Can central sensitization be reversed in patients with chronic or persistent pain?
• Strategies for pain management - What is PNE? Are meditation and mindfulness just trendy? And 4 letter words, really? The role of diet, rest, movement, and understanding our brain. Plus mantras for clinicians and patients.
• Alphabet soup - Snippets of MI, CBT, ACT, PMA, GMI, DIMs and SIMs.
• Resources for patients and clinicians - Low cost and free resources available through the internet and apps. Plus books, education materials, and a plethora of online links for further exploration.

Objectives

By the completion of the course the participant will be able to:

1. Identify 5 key current resources related to pain neuroscience education.
2. Discuss 3 strategies to reduce the pain experience using language and communication.
3. Identify 5 opioids common in physical therapy practice.
4. Describe the differences between the 3 components of graded motor imagery.
5. List 4 findings consistent with central sensitization.
6. Describe 5 components of a pain care or pain rehab program.

No transfer, refund or credit will be given for cancellation 3 days or less before the CE event, or when handouts or other CE event materials are available electronically, including but not limited to emailed or downloadable pdf documents.
All unapplied transfers and credits will expire September 26, 2026.

Rehab Connections reserves the right to cancel the CE event up to one week prior to the CE event. Rehab Connections will not be responsible for any charges incurred by the registrant due to the cancellation of the CE event, other than the CE event tuition.
