Description

Two areas of common musculoskeletal dysfunction can have significant ramifications impacting balance, sleep, upper extremity function, and much more. As 1:1 direct contact for manual therapy and patient education decreases symptoms, individualized therapeutic exercise selection and modification then becomes a key component of the rehab professional's treatment approach. This new course was developed to introduce and review a variety of effective and efficient treatment strategies based on specific evaluation findings as presented. This course will emphasize treatment with extensive lab time to practice all interventions and progressions.

• Detailed anatomy and palpation review of the cervical and shoulder complex
• Brief literature review of evidence supporting or negating strengthening and stretching neck and shoulder muscles
• Review of exercise principles and dosage of exercises
• Neck strengthening progressions for patients of all ages
• Multiple strategies for strengthening the deep neck flexors and extensors
• Training deep upper quadrant musculature for stabilization and endurance
• Mechanics of the shoulder and implications for strengthening
• When to train individual musculotendinous structures vs a muscle group vs combinations of muscles
• Review of current EMG data for pertinent shoulder complex muscles during exercise and ADL
• Impact of scapula position on periscapular muscle function and symptoms in the neck and shoulder
• Popular exercises that would not be recommended for our patients

Philip Toal, PT, DPT is a graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo, graduating with a doctor of physical therapy degree. He has also completed an Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency at the Institute of Therapeutic Science (ITS) as well as a Fellowship in Orthopaedic and Manual Physical Therapy. Dr. Toal is a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy, is Certified in Orthopaedic and Manual Physical Therapy, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic and Manual Physical Therapists and is a Certified Clinical Instructor. He is the Program Director for the Cleveland Clinic’s Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency. He is the Clinical Rehab Manager at the Cleveland Clinic Akron General Health and Wellness Center in Bath, Ohio. Currently, he serves as adjunct faculty at ITS for its residency program, is Adjunct Faculty in Cleveland State University’s DPT program teaching manual therapy and complex conditions for extremities, and teaches continuing education courses to other PTs nationally. Dr. Toal is also co-owner of Tier One Education, an Ohio based continuing education company.

Cancellations:
Registration fee, less a $50 administration fee per session, is refunded if notice of cancellation is received more than 10 days in advance of the CE event. Cancellations made less than 10 days in advance of the CE event date forfeit the entire tuition fee. Tuition can be transferred to another individual or another CE event, one time only. No transfer, refund or credit will be given for cancellation 3 days or less before the CE event, or when handouts or other CE event materials are available electronically, including but not limited to emailed or downloadable pdf documents.
All unapplied transfers and credits will expire September 26, 2026.

Rehab Connections reserves the right to cancel the CE event up to one week prior to the CE event. Rehab Connections will not be responsible for any charges incurred by the registrant due to the cancellation of the CE event, other than the CE event tuition.
